Figma Config 2026: Figma Motion

Here's one of the most interesting updates to come out of Figma Config 2026: Figma Motion.
Figma Motion is a new Figma feature that lets designers create animations directly inside Figma, using a timeline, keyframes, animated components, and motion variables instead of moving into separate tools like After Effects, Jitter, or Principle.
The big deal is that motion can now sit inside the same file as the product design, design system, and developer handoff, so animations are easier to design, review, reuse, and actually ship.
'Motion' as an element of design has been treated as a finishing touch for a long time (something added after or handed off to another tool), but it's actually a huge part of UX.
It helps users understand what changed, where to look, what just happened, and what they should do next.
A button state.
A transition between screens.
A loading interaction.
A menu opening.
A confirmation moment.
These details are not just decoration. They shape how intuitive and polished a product feels. They're the elements of a design you might not notice, but your brain does.
The bit I’m most interested in is not “can Figma replace After Effects?” Rather how enmeshed can design and motion become? Because if animated components, motion variables, timelines, comments, and Dev Mode handoff all live in the same file, motion becomes easier to design, review, reuse, and ship.
It's revolutionary for small or swiftly moving teams. It closes the gap between designing the interaction and building the interaction.
Of course, more motion does not automatically mean better UX. Used badly, it becomes noise. Used well, it creates clarity.
So, where does motion genuinely make the product easier to understand? That is where this update becomes useful.
